Obadiah

 

1-9                                               The LORD, the Real Ruler

 

S.I. Justice will come to each nation because the sovereign LORD rules all peoples and states

(What nations and individuals sow, they will also reap)

 

What are the three results in this text that show men and nations live under the just and sovereign rule of  the LORD God?

I. A proud nation’s boasting brings destruction from the LORD.  1-4 Oracle 1

   A.  Tile – Revelation from God, call to battle vs. 1

   B.  Humbling will come for sure  vs. 2

   C.  Edom’s pride  vs. 3-4

II. A proud nation’s punishment is decreed by the LORD. 5-7 Oracle 2

A.     Thieves rob only part of the goods.  vs. 5  (Jer. 49:7 – 13 

B.     Total destruction is coming.  Massive plundering  vs. 6

C.     Betrayal will come from your allies.  vs. 7

D.     The punishment fits the crime  (see vs. 15)

III. A proud nation’s day of Destruction will soon arrive as a day of the LORD.  8-9  Oracle 3

1. Rhetorical Question – the wise men (leaders) will all be wiped out.  vs. 8
2. Edom’s troops will all be wiped out.  vs. 9a
3. The entire population will be destroyed.  vs. 9b  (Progression)
4. God’s people (physical and spiritual) against the world system

 

10-14                           The LORD, the Just Judge

 

S.I.  The Sovereign LORD will justly judge each nation and individual

Three reasons why the Sovereign LORD will justly judge a nation or a person

The just judgment from the LORD will come :

I.  When a nation refuses to help and rejoices over the destruction of God’s people.  vs. 10-12

     A.  Brothers – Treachery – withholding help – the Good Samaritan vs. 11

     B.  Rejoicing over the dark providences that came upon their brothers.  vs. 12

    C.  Do not / stop opposing God’s people  vs. 12   (Rom. 12:17 – 21)

    D.  Attitudes lead to actions.  (ILL.)  Mrs. Stackpole

II. When a nation assists in the invasion and robbery of God’s people.  vs. 13

A.     Progressing Levels – Refuse to aid – Rejoice in bitter days. 

      Aiding the enemy and sharing in the robbery  vs. 13

B.     Coveting, stealing, kidnapping, murder, robbery, violations of natural law

And the Ten Commandments.

III. When a nation attempts to annihilate the escaping remnant of God’s peoples.  vs. 14

A.     Killing the survivors  vs. 14

B.     Imprisoning the survivors – Roman Empire, Communists: Soviet, China

God’s spiritual people, God’s physical people against the PLO, Iraq, Saddam,

God Promises the Wrong will be Made Right

 

S.I.  God will intervene in the world for judgment and justice 

How will God intervene in the world for judgment and justice?

Three ways that God will intervene in the world for judgment and justice:

I.  God will make right all wrongs  vs. 15 – 16

A.     The Day of the LORD

Babylon, Rome, Final

B.     All nations and Edom

C.     The punishment is properly set for the crime.

D.     The full annihilation of Edom

II.  God will rescue His people  vs. 17 – 18

1. Deliverance by the saviors, Jerub., Neh., Judas Maccabeus, Jesus 2X’s
2. Holiness on Mt. Zion means the presence of Yeshua ha mashiah
3. Judgment is coming, Fire is the symbol for enduring wrath
4. Covenant restoration – Abraham – Moses – David
5. Historic return of the exiles, they rebuilt the city, walls, and temple

III.  God will restore His peoples’ inheritance  vs. 19 – 21

A.     The captives returned to the land  vs. 20

B.     The land’s boundaries are expanded to the fullest extent  vs 19 – 20

C.     The exiles return and occupy their land  vs.  19 – 20

D.     The Maccabees’ fulfilled part of this 160 B.C.

E.      Elements not yet fulfilled point to a future fulfillment

F.      The LORD’s kingdom  vs. 21
